Dr. Enzo Liotti

Lecturer in Processing of Advanced Materials

I earned my Bachelor’s (BSc 2004) and Master’s (MSc 2006) degrees in Material Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Subsequently, I completed my PhD in Materials Science at the University of Loughborough in 2011, with a thesis focused on the characterization of nano-quasicrystalline aluminum alloys for high-temperature applications. The project involved the use of several synchrotron-based techniques, such as neutron and X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES and EXAFS). My experience with synchrotron research inspired me to pursue an academic career, leading to a postdoctoral position at the University of Oxford's Department of Materials from 2011 to 2019, where I worked on in-situ imaging of solidification with Professor Patrick  Grant. In 2019, I advanced to a Departmental Lecturer position in the same department .

Over the past 12 years, I have pioneered cutting-edge X-ray imaging techniques and data analysis algorithms to investigate critical physical phenomena during metal solidification. Throughout this period, detector technologies and X-ray sources have been continuously improving research capabilities, and capitalising on my multi-disciplinary research approach, divided equally among experimentation, technique development and data analytics, I have positioned myself at the forefront of these innovations, translating them into tools to extract scientific knowledge from observations.

I am principal investigator on two EPSRC funded projects (LiveX, £1,1m, EP/W024829/1; AIXISuMM, £2.7m, EP/X03884X/1) dedicated to the development of a new generation of multi-modal X-ray imaging techniques, named Artificial Intelligence X-ray Imaging (AIXI). I am also co-investigator, and Oxford lead, on the Materials 4.0 CDT (lead by Henry Royce Institute). â€‹â€‹
